“We arrive here by invitation of Sickhouse and ARE Holland. As some members of the Sickhouse club might already know, it is a place for experimentation, play and technology/media, where weirdness is allowed, exploring different ways of playing with others.
We came today as consultants of Sickhouse, sharing their question on what it means to have SPACE.
On our paths through Enschede, maybe due to our fascination with other social clubs, but also because of the similarities we have found with Sickhouse, we have got closer to Speeltuinen.
The Speeltuinen are places run by neighbours and open to the neighbours' play.
They are a big thing in Enschede, mainly due to its industrial history. The workers of the textile factory opened the speeltuinen in the 20-30s to provide a space for their families to play. They are for kids and adults, with activities from 0-100.
Nowadays, you can find 18 of them in Enschede. But let's be clear, I am not referring to any kind of playground; there can be more. I am referring to the ones that have a clubhouse attached and are run by a group of volunteers, offering a space for diverse initiatives around play and leisure initiated by the neighbours.
In our opinion, we think that they are the experts on Speel Ruimte (...)”. Board Meeting, 22/01/2026.
